Ken-Dang

Ken-Dang was a new wave/post punk from Bergen, Norway that was formed in the early 1980s by guitarist Odd Harald "Beinet" Hundvin, bassist Ronald Jensen, keyboard player/trombonist Morten Odéen (who had previously played in the group Blåfugl), vocalist Kjersti Bergesen (who had previously played in Ohms March and Parkens Grøde), and drummer Terje H. Hanssen who had previously played
in various swing, jazz, and big bands in the 1970s. The name Ken-Dang comes from the lead drum in Javanese gamelan music.

Ken-Dang made a name for themselves with a distinctive sound which was a combination of exotic Eastern rhythm patterns and British new wave. All songs are sung in English.

The song "Hours And Days" from the 1984 album Monsters & Miracles became a radio hit.

Kjersti Bergesen left the band in 1985 and was replaced for a short period by Ine Tømmerås until 1986. Bergesen continued her music career in the band Secret Mission and took part in Langsomt Mot Nord's self-titled debut album in 1985, before she became a presenter on TV 2.

The Accessories - The Accessory 7" (1982) -&- Vege's & Potatoes 12" (1982)

The Accessories was a post punk band from New Zealand that I know nothing about. They released a 7" and a 5-song EP in 1982 and then, as far as I know, they disappeared. The end.

I have the physical records but they are really rare and I didn't want to subject them to my scanner so I just stole the images from Discogs. Don't tell nobody.

The Howards - Pretty/Ugly EP (1994)

This is a band from Chicago who played in the early 90s and they understood that grunge was the flavor of the day but they didn't go all into it.

There are slight echoes of ska here and there, but there was no third wave at that time so the 'ska' sound would not appeal to a ska purist. There is a lot of surf-guitar influence as well.

Their sound is not indescribable but I can't describe it. They had an album prior to this record that Discogs describes as "swing jazz" which I can say I don't believe even though I have never heard it.

1 Break Even

2 Frankie Machine Garden

3 Gulag

4 Bigfoot

5 Creepy Creepy

This is the most grunge sounding song on the record. The rest of the record does not sound like this song.

Caught In The Act - Caught In The Act 12" EP (1984)

There are different kinds of 'new wave'. The most popular was the pop-styled keyboard-driven dance type.
This New York band is new wave but it's more of the "female punk vocals, distorted rock guitar, squeaky no-wave saxophone" variety. No keyboards and nothing to dance about. Not great, but really good.

1 Caught in the Act
2 My Imagination
3 Watch Out for that Dike Ike
4 Rat Race
5 Dance with Me

The Reply - All Good Things (1987)

This was a band from the US that played that punk/post-punk/power pop/mod/ska type of music. Guitar driven with noticeable keyboards. I forget where they're from - New York, or D.C., or some small island off the coast of Nebraska. Somewhere.
I remember they were known as a "ska" band but this record says otherwise. Maybe by 1987 ska wasn't in high demand so they chose to not record those songs.

From what I've heard this isn't their only release. Rumor has it that they put out a CD that includes these song with lots of other unreleased stuff. Anybody know anything about that? I've searched but found nothing except for the comment on Discogs that said the CD is for sale on Amazon. But it's not.

2 With a Purpose
3 Wake Up!

Pascal Boidart - Never Land 12" EP (1986)

Another California release recorded in Beverly Hills. I have no idea who Pascal Boidart is but a Google search brings up the name as a television editor in L.A.

I had this record for years and never really paid much attention to it but only recently have I gave it another spin and realized how great it actually is. Four excellent tracks of new wave rock.

1 The Land of Silence
2 The Ocean
3 Rule
4 Cocktail and a Zest of Lemon

The Safe - Pleasure Grooves (1987)

This is a rock/new wave band and this may be the only thing they released.

This record is notable for me because it is the first record I bought with my first paycheck from my current job many years ago. It was sold on eBay as a ska record but there is no ska on here. There is a slight ska/island influence on a couple songs but only very slight.
The song "Untrue Untrue" should have been a best-selling single.

Listen to "Untrue Untrue"

1 Untrue Untrue
2 Banana Men
3 Genie
4 Father Marconi
5 The Natural
6 It's an Illusion
